The Nishan Sahib (or The Respected Mark) is the flag Of the Sikh Nation. It is alway supposed to be present in front of all Sikh Gurdwaras (places of worship). The Flag has to be on a pole which has the Sikh broadsword (Khanda) at it’s head. According to the Miri Piri doctrine of Guru Hargobind, the Nishan Sahib must be flown higher than the flag of any temporal power. This signifies the supremacy of God and the Sikh Panth (Panth means ‘The Path’ or The Sikh Nation) over all worldly powers.
