Sikh Officer In The German Wehrmacht - World War II

Very rare photograph of a very handsome  Sikh Officer of the German Wehrmacht (Air Force) in World War II. Taken from the military ID card.

Note:  one of the  last German Units to fight the Soviet onslaught of Berlin in 1944 was the Sikh Legion of the German Army (erroneously called the Indian Legion). It is believed that the survivors of the legion, if any, were transported to the Bolshevik Gulags in Siberia.  If you have details and photographs of the Legion, please contact the Sikh Archives.

  1. Very Very nice and rare picture. But the history is a bit off. Doubt very much anyone from the Indian legion fought in the Battle of Berlin in 1945. They were caputered by the Allies in France. Since the unit were posted on the Atlantic wall.

    • Ricky your a racist bigot, see this Sikh Warrior Freedom Fighter was in British India’s Sikh Regiment, and then when all the British ran like cowards when Germans started wining, he and other Sikhs fought to the last or till the bullets ran out and even then kept fighting with bare hands till they were placed under arrest. Then the Germans being amazed by the Spiritual enlightenment and bravery of the Sikhs they told them look Britan has ensaved you Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs, why not fight Britain and free India!

Or some simply enlisted to get Britain to leave India!
So how any Indian like u did not know these guys are Freedom Fighters fighting with there blood to free India, while Mahatama Ghandi and Neru got all the credit. It is because of Brave Sikhs that Britain freed Inida!!!

  3. Very rare picture … you’re right … the Indian Legion were captured in France during the time of the Battle of Berlin and some were tried/sentenced in Dehli and in fact incarcerated in the ‘Red Fort’.

  6. Just a small correction I would like to add, the wehrmacht was the term used to refer to the entire regular armed forces of Germany (not including the Waffen SS), the Luftwaffe was the Air Force.

    • I have never read this before. but he definite said, that the white rase with Blue eyes and blond hears is the Master rase. And the others have no value. His only aim was to weaken the British. If he had won the war he would have slaved the Indians too.

  10. The Wehrmacht is the army. The German air force is the Luftwaffe.

I would like to say THANK YOU to people who have appreciated the contributions of SIKHS, but it is a fact that Sikhs have never got the actual credit for there Bravery and valour or there community service. World WAR 1 or 2 SIKHS fought and saved lives but till today they have to fight for the protection of there IDENTITY, ask for Basic rights let it be any country. History and contribution by SIKHS has been forgotten and a limited credit. SIKH History has been given limited right to exist in the Field of Education (BOOKS) as per convenience of politicians etc.. FRANCE has banned TURBAN because it has forgotten the contributions made by SIKH Soldiers who saved them from HITLER, at that point I wish FRANCE could have even raised there voice against SIKH TURBAN BAN when SIKHS marched on the streets of FRANCE to save them.

As a member of Indian Legion which had its own flag tricolour with springing tiger and this Sikh was part of the Legion not of Luftwaffe which is air force to which none were assigned .
In a recent book”Netaji in Europe ” is many a detail about these troops who were given the name Indisches Infanterie Regiment 950′ by middle of May 1942 .
With the defeat of the Third Reich imminent in May 1945, the remainder of the Indian Legion stationed in Germany sought sanctuary in neutral Switzerland. They undertook a desperate 2.6-kilometre march along the shores of Lake Constance, attempting to enter Switzerland via the alpine passes. This was, however, unsuccessful and the legion was captured by US and French forces and delivered to British and Indian forces in Europe. There is some evidence that some of these Indian troops were shot by French Moroccan troops in the town of Immenstadt after their capture, before they could be delivered to the British forces. The captured troops would later be shipped back to India, where a number would stand trial for treason for waging war against the King , while they were hailed as freedom fighters by the masses and eventually released but British and later Indian Army never allowed them to be taken back and for more than 20 years they had to wage struggle for arears of pay from the time they surrendered and were formed into Indian Legion.
